Friday’s drive was 200……...metres! As it was a beautifully
sunny day we decided to break the habit of this trip and stay more than one
night in the same place. We moved from the car park by the village to a parking
area where we had an uninterrupted view of the coastline, including Cannes ,
Antibes and Nice.
Saturday morning we headed for Italy
via Lidl, the smallest Lidl you have ever seen, complete with the smallest car
park, which wasn’t ideal for manoeuvring an 8 metre van. Whilst guarding Harry
from the avant-garde driving techniques of the locals, what should appear but
another Brit motorhome, the driver of which was obviously intent on some
challenging to-ing and fro-ing. After I’d discouraged them from the mayhem
which was occurring inside the building we exchanged a bit of travel
banter as is de-rigueur whenever 2 or more Brit ‘vanners meet. It wasn’t long
before we found a mutual point of fun – negotiating the nadgery streets of the
nearby town of Grasse, this very poor man’s Monaco would make an
excellent race track…. for pedal cars! We both laughed at the ridiculousness of
taking a motorhome through this town and when my new found ally in motorhome
madness said “I ended up in the bus station”! I replied “I know exactly
where you were! I went for the underground car park”. Fortunately it wasn’t,
and we broke free by going through what could best be described as the pit
lane.
I digress, back to the World’s smallest Lidl, Rachel escaped
unscathed from what can loosely be described as shopping, and we beat a hasty
exit out of the suburbs of Cagnes-sur-Mer in the direction of Italy .
The first chance we had for morning coffee was at the inappropriately named
‘aire de beausoliel’, the last service area in France .
Torrential rain accompanied with a hint of hailstones made us chuckle
ironically at the ‘area of beautiful sun’.
Our aire in Italy
is right next to the 24 kilometre Pista Ciclable Del Ponente Ligure, apparently
one of Italy ’s
most beautiful cycle paths which, if this thunderstorm stops, we will ride
tomorrow.
