It was about 100 miles to Marco Polo airport at Venice
to collect our very important guest. We had timed our arrival there to
coincide, as much as possible, with the arrival of the flight from England .
This meant doing something which really goes against the grain, sitting with
the engine ticking over for 45 minutes (at the nearby motorway service area) so
we could have the air conditioning on to stop us from spontaneously combusting
in the 30+c heat! When we heard that the plane had landed we drove the 6 miles
to the airport where I dropped Rachel off and went to park with all the other
‘non paying’ drivers who were parked in the only place there was any shade. As
I pulled up to join them who should make an appearance but the airport police!
Siesta time had just finished so they were out on patrol doing the rounds and
shifting people on. On about my 8th lap of the airport service roads
I spied Rachel again, with our much awaited special guest Amy!
We arrived at the small town of Avio
(north of Verona ) about 7pm and did a recce of the school which Amy was
due to visit on Wednesday. It was then just a case of finding somewhere handy
to park for the night, and we did, a small car park by a grassy children’s play
area. After chilli and wine (of course) and some good banter, we all retired
happily to bed about 10pm .
At 1.15am I was
driving again! You know those hidden automatic powerful water jets for watering
grassy areas? The area we were parked in was covered with them, and the noise
on the side of the van was like somebody skateboarding across the roof! Added
to that was we had all the roof vents fully open to try and stay cool, well it
was certainly refreshing to get a nice cool shower in the middle of the night!
We found somewhere water jet free, less than a mile away and
all resumed our sleep (of a fashion) until 8am .
