A Taste of Soave and The Dolomites

Amy and I kicked ideas around for where we should head for her final day/night before returning to Venice for her flight home on Saturday morning. We thought we’d sample Soave, 40 miles east of Lake Garda, which would leave us just 70 miles to do on Saturday morning. The town exceeded our expectations, having a lovely historical quarter. We waited until the sun had given us its hottest before we set off late afternoon to make the steep climb to the castle, where we took in the expansive views of the vineyard covered countryside. On our descent, Amy suggested that as we were in Soave it would be rather nice to call in at one of the many wine bars to sample some Soave. Rather surprisingly Rachel and I didn’t take much persuading! We finished off the evening with a barbeque which, for some reason, always starts with rather more smoke than I’m comfortable with, at least we know the smoke alarm in the van’s bedroom works!

Saturday morning started a little earlier than normal with a 7am cuppa before we set off at 8 for Marco Polo airport. We reluctantly dropped Amy off at 9.30 before heading 70 miles north into the Dolomites. It was still toasty until late afternoon, but once 7pm came we no longer needed every window open and we could enjoy a slightly cooler evening with NO MOSQUITOS!!

Taibon, at the foot of the Dolomites (2,000’) is just a small village but still supplies us roving types with a ‘full on’ free aire, even though the electricity was out of order. Despite the modest size of the place it has 2 churches with remarkably loud bells, slightly out of sync of each other, so every hour we got a reminder that yes, it was 4am, 5am etc. Rachel had predicted that with the following morning being Sunday there might be a bit extra bell ringing going on, at 7am her prediction came true so another early cuppa before heading ‘up’ further into the mountains. It was just 10am by the time we arrived at the Corvara aire, 5,500’, 12c, rain showers and 18mpg to get here. By the afternoon it was ‘batten down the hatches’ weather, wind and heavy rain, what a transformation from yesterday! We can’t actually remember when we last had rain on this trip.
